Building Libraries Program

Our Beliefs

At the Leffingwell Foundation, we believe that all developing readers deserve access to books and materials grounded in the Science of Reading. This evidence-based approach allows children to efficiently and confidently build the skills that can turn them into avid readers and future leaders.

We believe that books are for everyone, and that representation matters. When readers of all ages see their identities, cultures, and experiences reflected in books, they not only feel affirmed but also grow as readers - developing deeper engagement, joy, and literacy skills.

We believe that books have the power to change lives. The right book in the right hands can heal, inspire, and empower, fostering empathy, igniting dreams, connecting communities, and shaping change-makers.

Our Approach

Our Building Libraries Program follows a clear and thoughtful process to ensure impact and sustainability:

  1. Needs assessment and curation – We begin by identifying community needs and carefully curating books that align with the goals of our partners.

  2. Book ordering and delivery – We order and deliver collections, ensuring timely access to high-quality materials.

  3. Setup and orientation – We support each site with setup and provide guidance or training for effective use.

  4. Tracking and feedback – We track usage and gather feedback, helping us understand impact and refine our approach.

  5. Periodic replenishment - We provide periodic replenishment to keep each library fresh, relevant, and responsive to evolving community needs.

Examples of Curated Collections We Support

    Decodable books for early readers
    Dyslexia-friendly titles
    Adapted materials (e.g., braille, audiobooks)
    Bilingual and native language books
Culturally relevant and themed collections (e.g., BIPOC, social-emotional, illness)

    Our Impact

We partner with local nonprofits, schools, libraries, and clinics serving historically underrepresented populations.

    Every collection is:

    • Tailored to the needs of the site

    • Designed to support literacy growth and engagement

    • Left in place as a site-based library for ongoing community use
